Africa Youth Award

Transforming the lives of young people in Africa

Transforming the lives of young people in Africa

The Africa Youth Award (AYA) is a unique two-year discipleship and personal development programme designed specifically for young people. The programme was first introduced in 2007 and since then Transformed International has seen several thousand young people, across both East and West Africa, complete both the silver and gold programmes. These young people have grown in their spiritual lives and, for many, they have taken great steps forward in sustaining themselves, and their families, in entrepreneurial enterprises. The Silver and Gold Africa Youth Award programmes are divided into five sections:

 1. Christian discipleship – offering young people the opportunity to share and discuss their own thoughts on many youth issues and to find a Biblical perspective in areas that affect their lives.

2. Church service – involving young people in the everyday activities of his or her local church, using their gifts and abilities to serve the church.

3. Community Service – focuses on having a positive impact in their community. The aim is for young people to be active in meeting the needs of the community in a practical way.

4. Skills development – helping young people to develop business and life skills enabling them to take this into a job or setup their own businesses to provide for them and their families.

5. Physical recreation – young people engage in regular physical exercise through group or individual sports such as football, netball, dance, team building games and running. This increases their personal health and sense of wellbeing whilst having fun.

Over the course of 12 months, each participant has to be able to demonstrate that they have been actively involved in each of these five sections of the Award, for both the Silver and Gold Awards, in order to obtain their certificate of achievement.

Over the past 10 years…

Over the past 10 years…

Since the introduction of this Spiritual Transformation training programme, at least 3,000 African church pastors and leaders have passed through the training. The aim has always been for these leaders to then take the teaching and their personal testimonies of transformation back to their own families, churches and congregations. God only knows how many tens of thousands of Christian believers are now living with a greater understanding and outworking of God’s plan for their lives.

opportunities have opened up for them in Christian service within their local churches; similarly, for many, entrepreneurial businesses have started in farming, tailoring, bicycle repairs, building, bee-keeping, hairdressing, and the list goes on; community service, which has included helping to clean up local communities, maintaining local water sources, assisting in monitoring and reporting of Lifewater projects, and so much more, has given the young people a greater understanding and responsibility for local community issues; for some, their involvement in the Award has been an excellent addition to a CV in seeking out scarce employment; for all, a greater understanding of what it means to be an active follower of Jesus will have taken place.

A typical Africa Youth Award group of around 15-20 young people costs around UK£20 per month or UK£240 a year to support. This covers training manuals, graduation t-shirts, certificates and communication. Everything else is self-sustaining.

However, there are opportunities for sponsors to extend their support to cover games equipment, work tools and other equipment needed in the delivery of the Award.
