Aall Foundation Villages Projects and Kyaka II Pilot extension September 2025

Introduction

During the summer this year, with the support of The Aall Foundation, our teams in East Africa have been revisiting home, schools and health centres where Lifewater Systems have previously been donated to carry out maintenance of these systems in order to ensure continued effective functionality providing clean and pure drinking water across communities.

In addition, they extended the provision of new Lifewater systems to schools and health centres in the Kyaka II Refugee Settlement. Thousands of home in this settlement have portable or household Lifewater systems, provided by our partner, Waterworks, but the communal settings – schools and health centres, had lacked facilities to provide clean and safe water, so children and vulnerable people were still being exposed to water borne diseases in those settings. This we are gradually addressing, as can be seen in this report.

Lifewater reconditioning Programme 2025

Between May and September 2025 the following number of Lifewater systems in the Villages programme were reconditioned (having their worn our filter replaced, along with any other damaged parts):

Uganda – 900 Lifewater systems reconditioned

Rwanda – 250 Lifewater systems reconditioned

Kenya – 250 Lifewater systems reconditioned

The reconditioning work was carried out by our area Africa Youth Award (AYA) teams as part of their community service involvement in their local communities.

It is hoped that we will be able to recondition a further swathe of Lifewater systems in Uganda in 2026, alongside 2-3 more Lifewater Village distributions there.

Testimony from a Kenyan Lifewater recipient obtained during the reconditioning programme:

“I wanted to share a powerful story that highlights the real impact of Lifewater.

There is a woman who, despite having one of her Lifewater buckets broken, chose not to give up on it. Understanding the importance of safe drinking water, she ingeniously drilled a hole into a regular bottle and fitted it onto her damaged bucket so she could continue using Lifewater.

She shared how Lifewater has protected her and her family from chronic waterborne diseases like typhoid. Not only has her health improved, but her neighbours have also started using Lifewater and are benefiting greatly from it.

Her story is a testament to the difference Lifewater is making — not just as a product, but as a source of hope, health, and resilience in her community.”

Pilot Programme Kyaka II Refugee Settlement

Kyaka II Refugee Settlement, located in Kyegegwa district in South Western Uganda, hosts an estimated population of over 133,000 refugees mainly from Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, and Somalia. In partnership with Nsamizi TISD, FCA, MTI, UNHCR, and OPM, Lifewater piloted a project to provide water filters to institutions in the settlement, launched from 16-19th September 2024. The pilot was later extended in February 2025, with a further extension in September 2025. The Aall Foundation has been a main sponsor of this pilot programme.

Number of Schools with Lifewater (LW) Double Filter Systems

Currently, 4 schools are equipped with LW systems:

  • Kakoni Primary School – 4 systems
  • Bujubuli Primary School – 4 systems
  • Bujubuli Secondary School – 4 systems
  • Bukere Secondary School – 8 systems (4 installed in 2024, and an additional 4 added in Sept 2025)

  1. Number of Health Facilities with LW Systems

Currently, 4 health facilities have LW systems:

  • Bujubuli Health Centre IV – 10 systems (4 installed in 2024, 4 added Feb 2025, 2 added Sept 2025). This is because this is the main referral hospital in the Settlement covering the highest refugee population.
  • Mukondo Health Centre III – 2 systems (installed in 2024)
  • Bwiriza Health Centre III – 2 systems (installed Sept 2025)
  • Itambabiniga Health Centre II – 2 systems (installed Sept 2025)

Total health facility systems: 16

Bujubuli Health Centre IV has become the main institutional beneficiary, now hosting 10 LW systems, making it the largest equipped facility under this pilot programme.
